28 Memories from 28 Years!

Today is my birthday and I LOVE birthdays. I get to celebrate just about all the time for a week straight and I even get to eat gluten-free/vegan cake. What a treat! So today, since I’m so excited, I’m going to remember all the amazing things that have happened over my last 28 years! Ok maybe I don’t remember this one, but look how cute me and my dad are! Me and Dad

  1. For my first birthday my mom made me my “favorite blanket” that finally got kicked out of bed when my husband and I moved in together. I still admit to stuffing blankets in my mouth when I sleep as a coping mechanism.  Strange I know.
  2. My earliest memory was of little two-year old me throwing my pacifier in the dumpster. Such a bittersweet memory. Also, I hear my sister was born this year but I don’t really remember that.
  3. My sister fell down the stairs. Our floor was checkerboard colored. That’s all I know.
  4. I vaguely remember some yummy cake waiting for me when I work up from my nap, but apparently we were fabulous on trikes.Sisters and trikes
  5. My parents threw me a ballerina party and even made us all balloon animals! That’s dedication.Easter 1990 or 1991
  6. I started first grade in Portland, Oregon where we met “the boys.” Together we ran around the countryside building dams in the creek and working my younger sister like a slave. Good times…
  7. Corduroy dresses were all the rage. I sported the heck out of them!
  8. Mr. Bonner was the WORST. But Halloween was pretty legit…Little Sisters
  9. For some reason I was REALLY into Kewpie dolls. And precious moments. I still have both in a box somewhere.
  10. I made a time capsule and I still remember where I buried it. Unfortunately I also remember what I buried in it- Nothing too exciting about pencils and erasers.
  11. My second little sis was born this year and she even got me presents on her own birthday. Such a thoughtful little fetus. Mom also made me favorite blanket number 2 this year which still comforts me when I visit home.
  12. My family moved to Colorado and enrolled me in the hippie school of the century. LOVED IT.
  13. Nothing like birthday laser-tag to say I’m 13 in the 90′s!
  14. I was so sad to leave my little school for the big public school, but I landed the lead in the school play as a freshman and wound up loving it. I was such a little theater dork!
  15. My little bro was born when I was 15 and he’s still my little miracle every-day. As in, it’s a miracle my parents’ house hasn’t burned down, and maybe that my brother still has eyebrows. Wait, does he?
  16. I was grounded because of my grades, but my two besties still made it over for a good ole family dinner. Yeah, you could’t pay me to go back. Sweet sixteen for sure!
  17. The best thing about being 17 was being a lifeguard at the neighborhood pool. Still one of my favorite jobs of all time- lots of sun, always in my bathingsuit, and endless poolside pizza. Those were the days!
  18. To make up for my sixteenth I threw a “Sweet 18 luau” with all my friends that doubled as a sort-of graduation party. Such fun times. 18th Birthday
  19. Future husband-Garret got me an Aveda hair kit after having known me for only 4 months. How well he knows me…
  20. 20-year old Elle moved to Texas and started school at TCU. This may not be a pic of me, but some of my best memories that year were having my boyfriend and brother in one place. Luke even dressed like Garret whenever he could! So cute.Boyfriends and brothers
  21. I had already quit my sorority three months in, but my sorority sisters still took me “out” to the sorority house for some late night cake. Nothing says 21 like cake in your jammies!
  22. I was fresh back from Paris and ready to graduate! Unfortunately I still had two semesters to go. SENIORITIS!paris
  23. I got my first job, first apartment, and Garret and I moved in together! We had a beautiful little loft in Pittsburgh, PA where I worked as an assistant buyer for American Eagle Outfitters. I thought I was living the dream!
  24. Mom got me my beautiful hot-pink Dooney and Bourke purse that is still a staple of my wardrobe. LOVE that thing. Also, around the same time we decided to move to Cali! So exciting!
  25. Moving to Cali was a little rough for me at first, but, Garret swept me away to Mendocino for the weekend as a birthday surprise. It was the first time I knew I would always love Cali.Mendocino
  26. We had just gotten married and hubby had a major business trip to attend to, but somehow he surprised me and drove all the way from so-Cal just so he could spend three hours with me on my birthday. He also baked me cookies (probably the third time he has cooked for me over our life together).Got hitched
  27. We celebrated my birthday with style, dressing like hipsters and hitting up the San Francisco speakeasies. I also drank a bit too much, but at least I went out with flare!Hipsters
  28. This year I get to celebrate with friends, family, and superbowl fun. I’m so blessed to have experienced so many wonderful things in my life, and I’m so excited for all the amazing things ahead!

I guess my years just keep getting better. Which means the old adage is true- whatever age you are is what percentage of awesome you are. It’s only getting better from here on out!

  1. Beautiful blog post and beautiful life! Isn’t that a great feeling when you realize your life is just getting better and better? And that picture of Garret and Luke KILLS me! Adorable.

    • Thanks Heather! Yes, it really does get better each year. And Garret will forever be Luke’s role model. They are just my favorite little duo!
